Baroness Anne Longfield, former Children’s Commissioner and Executive Chair of the Centre for Young Lives, responding to the scrapping of the two child benefits limit, said:

“Government is right to scrap the two child limit in full and deserves huge credit for doing so. This was a cruel and ineffective policy that pulled hundreds of children into poverty every week. Ending it is the most cost-effective way of reducing child poverty.

“There is overwhelming evidence showing how growing up in poverty is more likely to lead to shorter life expectancies, poorer educational outcomes, worse physical and mental health, and reduced life chances.

“We cannot hope to build a stronger economy and society while millions of children are in poverty. Scrapping the two child limit is an important foundation for the Government’s wider child poverty strategy to build on. It is a vital step towards what must be a long term, ambitious mission to reduce drastically the number of children growing up in poverty by providing them with the help and support they need to thrive.”
