The Centre for Young Lives is beginning a new research project to explore ‘looksmaxxing’ - a growing internet subculture focused on maximising perceived physical attractiveness - and the impact of social media algorithms on boys' health and self-identity. We want to understand how these beauty trends are impacting how some boys and young men see themselves and the wider world.

Call for evidence

To inform this research, we are asking organisations or individuals with professional expertise or lived experience to share their knowledge and views with us. We would like to hear:

  • How is the ‘manosphere’ and online content changing boys and young men’s views about masculinity, their own identity, and their attitudes towards women and girls?
  • How are ideals about male beauty standards impacting boys and young men’s mental and physical health and self-identity?
  • To what extent are boys and young men changing their behaviours as a result of these online trends?
  • How can boys and young men be supported to safely navigate online content about masculinity, beauty standards, and looksmaxxing?
  • Any other insights, experiences, or evidence relevant to this work.

To submit to this call for evidence, please send your submission to ben.firth@centreforyounglives.org. The closing date is Friday 9th January 2026.

Young people’s call for evidence

We also want to hear directly from young people about how social media, online trends, and content about masculinity and appearance are shaping boys’ views and opinions. We want to know:

  • What kind of content do you see about looks, appearance, or attractiveness? What apps or sites is this on? Which influencers are you aware of?
  • Have you heard of 'looksmaxxing' or similar ideas about changing your appearance? What other terms have you heard?
  • If you have heard of looksmaxxing, what sort of techniques are you aware of?
  • If you are aware of looksmaxxing, do you and other young people think that it is an issue? How do you feel about it?
  • Do you think anything needs to be done about these trends? Are they harmful or helpful?
  • Anything else you want to add.

To submit to this call for evidence, please fill out this anonymous form: https://forms.office.com/e/unuvqrPz62.The closing date is Friday 9th January 2026.
